The Sounds of Bobcats: An Overview of the Feline’s Unique Vocalizations

From the screeching sound of a mountain lion, to the mewing of a house cat, cats of all sizes and shapes have a variety of vocalizations to communicate with the world around them. Bobcats, one of the more common wild cats in North America, are no exception. While their vocalizations may not be as loud or as recognizable as their larger wildcat relatives, the sounds of a bobcat can be quite distinctive in their own way.

Bobcats, or Lynx rufus, are mid-sized cats that typically measure between 18 – 30 inches long, with a tail length of four to seven inches. They are found throughout the United States, Mexico, and parts of Canada. As their name implies, bobcats have short, “bobbed” tails, and their fur can range from reddish to brownish-gray in color. Bobcats are solitary animals, and they are most active at night, hunting small animals such as rabbits, rodents, and birds.

What Do Bobcats Sound Like?

Bobcats are very vocal creatures and have quite a few sounds in their repertoire. The most commonly heard sound of a bobcat is a loud, throaty meow, similar to the meow of a house cat. The sound is often accompanied by a distinctive rasping that can be heard from a long distance. This sound is usually made when a bobcat is communicating with its own kind, either in search of a mate or when warning other bobcats away from its territory.

Bobcats also make a low-pitched growl or snarl when threatened. This sound is quite unique and can often be confused with the sound of a larger wildcat, such as a mountain lion. Bobcats are also known to make a loud screech or yowl, especially during mating season. This sound is much louder than the meow, and can be heard from up to a mile away.

What Do Bobcats Sound Like When Aggressive?

When a bobcat is feeling particularly threatened or aggressive, they may make a loud, raspy hiss. This sound is similar to the hiss of a house cat, but much more intense. This sound is often accompanied by a deep growl or snarl, and the bobcat may even arch its back and puff out its fur to make itself look bigger and more intimidating.

What Do Bobcats Sound Like When Purring?

Bobcats also purr when they are content and happy. The sound of a bobcat purr is much softer and gentler than the loud meows and growls. This purring sound is very similar to the purring of a house cat and is made by vibrating the bobcat’s vocal chords. The purring sound is often accompanied by a low drone, similar to the sound of a bee.

The sounds of a bobcat can be quite varied and unique, depending on the situation. From loud, throaty meows, to deep growls and purring, bobcats have a variety of vocalizations to communicate with their environment. While the sounds of a bobcat may not be as loud or as recognizable as the vocalizations of their larger wildcat relatives, they are certainly distinctive in their own way.
